Springs help close check valves and maintain the correct operating relationship between internal components. Weak or damaged springs can prevent a device from meeting test requirements.
Reduced pressure principle assemblies include a relief valve that provides additional protection for higher hazard applications. Relief valve issues can cause dripping, discharge, or failed test readings.
Testing and repair depend on working shutoff valves and accessible test cocks. If these components are seized, damaged, leaking, or missing caps, they may also need service.

A repair is often worth attempting when the assembly is serviceable, parts are available, and the body of the device is in reasonable condition.
